WASHINGTON (June 22, 2021) – Howard University public relations major rising senior
A'Maiya Allen resumed the 2020-2021 Senior Spotlight series, featuring volleyball's
Abby Morrow (Detroit).
Q: When did you start playing volleyball?
A: I started playing volleyball in eighth grade, but I took the sport serious during my freshman year of high school.
I played soccer ever since I could walk and always competed in multiple sports simultaneously. The stamina, running and jumping came easy from playing soccer and the over-head motion skills came from baseball and lacrosse.
There were many factors contributing to why I was "naturally good" at volleyball.
Q: How did you end up at Howard?
A: During high school, I attended volleyball camps at Big Ten colleges, but I did not want to attend a big school.
My dad attended Howard Law School and when we came for a visit, he would reminisce about his time at HU. The way he talked about Howard influenced my decision to attend as well.
As soon as I got on the court, I had an instant connection with the women on the team and the coach expressed an interest in me. Everything came together and it just felt right.
Q: What was your favorite volleyball memory?
A: My favorite volleyball memory was taking a set at Penn State in 2017, one of the highlights of my career. We believed in ourselves, but to actually compete and see our hard work pay off was pretty spectacular.
We ended up losing the match, but the energy on the court was amazing. The way we worked together was some of the best stuff we did as a team.
Q: If you were not playing volleyball, what other sport would you be playing?
A: If I was not playing volleyball, I would have probably played soccer.
Q: What is your pregame ritual?
A: My pregame ritual is hanging out in the locker room while blasting music with my teammates.
Q: What was your favorite Howard memory?
A: Every homecoming was a great memory. We're student-athletes, so we don't partake in many student activities, but we still have fun when we get the chance.
It's so great for us to be together in a non-sport environment. To see my teammates with their hair done, makeup and heels -- it really felt like a sisterhood.
Q: If you could describe your Howard experience in one word, what would it be?
A: It would be enlightening. Not only was I closer to my own culture, but I was enlightened about how the world works.
Q: What message would you give to the rest of your team?
A: Your time at Howard will be a crazy journey, so just let go and let God guide you.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: After I finish my final semester in the fall, I plan to teach in the Detroit Public School System.
