Senior Spotlight: The Grad Edition…Featuring Zachyre Lane

A talk with Tar Heel native Zachyre Lane

WASHINGTON (May 19, 2021) – Howard University media, journalism, and film major Monét Bowen continued the 2020-21 Senior Profile series with a graduate edition, featuring track teammate Zachyre Lane (Durham, N.C.).

Q: What is your favorite part about track?
A: My favorite part about track is meeting some of my closest, life-long friends through the sport. We all had similar challenges when it came to having a difficult workout and/or academic stress, but it makes life easier knowing that I'm not the only one going through those things.

Q: How did you get started in track?
A: My mom ran track at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., where she took me to a track meet and all I could think about was being hot (lol). But I saw how much fun everyone was having, so my mom took me to my first practice where I ran 10 minutes around the track.

Later, I joined the team and stuck with the sport from fourth grade and beyond.

Q: What kept you motivated?
A: I live by the quote, "trust the process." My friend Tahisha, who lost her battle to cancer, would always say that to me. In any challenging situation in life, I always say the quote to remind myself to push through and stay motivated.

Q: If you were not competing in track, what other sport would you do?
A: I've always been interested in basketball, but I'm way too short for the sport (lol). So, I would say either swimming or volleyball.

Q: Who is your favorite athlete and why?
A: Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (Jamaican sprinter) because although she is short (around my height), she's very powerful and does a lot of great things for her community back home. She is also humble.

Q: What's your favorite memory at Howard?
A: One of my favorite memories at Howard would have to be my freshman year when the student-athletes had to return early second semester for competition. It was challenging because of the frigid temperatures, but it was a great time. We got very close as a team.

Q: Plans after graduation?
A: I will be attending The University of Miami, pursuing my doctoral degree in physical therapy (PT). Also, I plan on getting certified in personal training, massage therapy, and body sculpting.

I'm not sure which subject I'm going to specialize in, but I'm interested in cancer rehabilitation so I can give back to my cancer community, pediatric physical therapy, and professional sports PT.

Q: What or who will you miss at Howard?
A: I'll definitely miss springtime on Howard's campus and hanging out with my friends after practice.

Q: What advice would you give future Bison?
A: My advice to future Bison would be to try new things and explore your hobbies. Your future job should not be a job, but should be a hobby you're getting paid to enjoy.

Also, always remember that growth is uncomfortable.

Q: Who would you like to thank?
A: I would like to thank my parents for helping me complete my undergraduate degree in 3 ½ years. There was a time I didn't think I would graduate on time due to my cancer relapse, but with motivation and prayers from my friends, teammates, and family, I'm able to and forever grateful.

I also want to thank my dad for taking me to every meet, attending every practice, buying new practice shoes and clothes, and being my biggest supporter throughout my 12 years in track.
