WASHINGTON (April 7, 2021) – Howard University media, journalism, and film major
Monét Bowen continued the 2020-21 Senior Spotlight series with track teammate thrower
Kaylah Clark.
Q: What is your favorite part about track?
A: My favorite part of track is building meaningful relationships with my teammates and coaches.
Q: How did you get started in track?
A: I was looking for another sport after playing soccer and my mom suggested track. I didn't want to run, so I tried throwing and stuck with it!
Q: What kept you motivated?
A: My parents, coaches, friends and teammates kept me motivated. They always encourage me to keep going and have fun along the journey.
Q: If you were not competing in track, what other sport would you do?
A: If I was not competing in track and field, I would say either softball or swimming.
Q: Who is your favorite athlete and why?
A:
Michelle Carter (American shot putter and Olympic Champion) because she is a perfect representation of strength and beauty. Seeing her journey as both a Black woman and thrower has been really inspiring to me, both as an athlete and young woman.
Q: What's your favorite memory at Howard?
A: One of my favorite experiences at Howard was watching Beyoncé's "Homecoming Film" in Cramton Auditorium with other Howard students. The energy was incredible and it was an amazing time to celebrate Black excellence and HBCUs.
Q: Plans after graduation?
A: I will be beginning my career in education by teaching Secondary English in my hometown of Miami with Teach for America. For my post graduate studies, I will be pursuing a degree focused in education leadership, policy, or curriculum design.
Q: What or who will you miss at Howard?
A: I will miss being in close proximity to all of my friends and really the Howard culture.
Q: What advice would you give future Bison?
A: Enjoy the journey and be kind with yourself. Don't let fear keep you from taking advantage of amazing opportunities that come your way.
Q: Who would you like to thank?
A: I would like to thank all of my family, friends, coaches, line sisters, and especially teammates for making my Howard experience everything and more.
