NORFOLK, Va. (April 24, 2021) – Howard University men's tennis team saw its 2021 campaign come to an end in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Semifinals, falling to top-seeded South Carolina State (SCSU), 4-0, at Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University (ODU).
"Although our season did not end with a title, Coach Breanna Addison and I are happy with what we've accomplished," said Howard Director of Tennis
Nicholas Askew. "The groundwork we were able to lay this year, especially in the short time span, was expertly done. This year, we started a championship level team on its course."
The match opened with doubles play where SCSU took two-out-of-three and held the upper hand going into singles competition. Freshmen duo
Justin Cadeau (West Orange, N.J.) and
Gabe Knowles (Wind Gap, Pa.) ended their rookie campaigns unbeaten.
Cadeau and senior
Roger Lyn (Kingston, Jamaica) served as the squad's No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, respectively, where they each won the first set. Cadeau led South Carolina State's Aleska Daskalovic after winning set one, 6-4, while Lyn grabbed game one against All-MEAC First Team selection Marcelo Rodriguez, 6-3.
Both matches were unfinished due to South Carolina State winning the necessary three singles matches to advance.
Lyn ends his collegiate career as an All-MEAC selection and a two-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Scholar Athlete.
Despite the outcome, Howard recorded 19 service aces for the program's inaugural Ace-A-Thon, which was launched Friday evening.
"Thank you to everyone for pledging your support to Howard University men's and women's tennis programs," Askew continued. "Your contributions will help us towards our ultimate goal of bringing multiple titles while competing against the top programs in the nation."
Howard finished the season 2-4 overall (1-1 MEAC) while returning five Bison, led by Cadeau.
"Our task ahead is to continue building through the off-season," Askew ended. "We've got a strong talented recruitment class coming in next year, who have a driven core of returners to lead them. Bison Nation will want to keep a close watch on what we are developing."
