Women’s Tennis Ends Season with Victory at Coppin State

Bison close out year on a high note

BALTIMORE (April 17, 2021) – Howard University women's tennis team closed out the 2021 campaign on a high note, winning their first match of the season against conference rival Coppin State (CSU), 7-0, at the CSU Tennis Complex.

With the victory, HU snapped its two-year slide, dating back to April 2019, while securing Director of Tennis Nicholas Askew's first win as Lady Bison coach.

Howard opened the morning with a pair of doubles victories.

Sophomores Yemisi Ifederu (London, England) and Hana El Sherif (Cairo, Egypt) served as the Bison's No. 1 doubles team, knocking off CSU's Tinashe Gwaze and Kenzie Jones, 6-2.

Fellow classmates Alexandra Blackwell (Austin, Texas) and Emnet Simunyola (Lorton, Va.) took down Coppin State's Christy Turner and Shariah Dunwell, 6-0.

In singles competition, the Bison dominated with four wins, led by Ifederu and El Sherif.

Junior Kendall Addison (Charlotte, N.C.) defeated Jones in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) while lone senior Aria Ragas (Johns Creek, Ga.) capped off her Bison career with a victory over Gwaze in a tough, three set contest (5-7, 6-1, 11-9).
