BALTIMORE (April 17, 2021) – Howard University women's tennis team closed out the 2021 campaign on a high note, winning their first match of the season against conference rival Coppin State (CSU), 7-0, at the CSU Tennis Complex.
With the victory, HU snapped its two-year slide, dating back to April 2019, while securing Director of Tennis
Nicholas Askew's first win as Lady Bison coach.
Howard opened the morning with a pair of doubles victories.
Sophomores
Yemisi Ifederu (London, England) and
Hana El Sherif (Cairo, Egypt) served as the Bison's No. 1 doubles team, knocking off CSU's Tinashe Gwaze and Kenzie Jones, 6-2.
Fellow classmates
Alexandra Blackwell (Austin, Texas) and
Emnet Simunyola (Lorton, Va.) took down Coppin State's Christy Turner and Shariah Dunwell, 6-0.
In singles competition, the Bison dominated with four wins, led by Ifederu and El Sherif.
Junior
Kendall Addison (Charlotte, N.C.) defeated Jones in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) while lone senior
Aria Ragas (Johns Creek, Ga.) capped off her Bison career with a victory over Gwaze in a tough, three set contest (5-7, 6-1, 11-9).
Howard finished the regular season 1-4 overall (1-2 MEAC).
