BALTIMORE (March 5, 2021) – Howard University women's volleyball team dropped its bout against Coppin State (CSU) in straight sets (16-25, 16-25, 13-25) at PEC Arena.
HU (2-5, 1-4 MEAC) was unable to get into a rhythm, committing 21 hitting errors on the night.
Freshman
Jennifer Bolden (Los Angeles) led the Bison with eight kills, followed by redshirt junior
Marcelle Butler (Canton, Ga.) tallying seven kills in a losing effort.
Howard held a slim advantage midway through the first frame, 12-11, until CSU scored four unanswered points to take control of game one and lead the match 1-0.
Coppin State led from start-to-finish in set two, 16-25, and took a commanding lead entering game three.
Newcomer
Ariel Finch (Los Angeles) opened game three with a kill, but CSU regained the upper hand quickly with seven consecutive points, including four service aces by Salma Gonzalez, and put the contest out of reach.
Sophomore setter
Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) registered 21 assists, three service aces and three digs in the loss.
For Coppin State, they won the season series over HU, 3-1, while moving to .500 (4-4, 3-1 MEAC) on the season. Miajavon Coleman filled the stat sheet, notching nine kills (match-high), five service aces (match-best), five digs and three total blocks in the win.
Monday (March 8), the Bison travel back to Baltimore for a rematch with long-time rival Morgan State. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. inside the Hill Field House.
