Softball Sweeps Towson in Midweek Doubleheader

Howard improves to 7-2, and extends their win streak to five.

TOWSON, MD-- Howard University continues its strong start, sweeping the Towson University Tigers for the first time in program history Wednesday afternoon, 8-4 in game one, and 4-2 (6) in game two that was called in the six-inning due to darkness. 

GAME 1, 8-4

HOW IT HAPPEN

The Bison scored seven runs in the final two stanzas to take down the Tigers, 8-4, and ending Towson 19 game winning streak over Howard. 

With the win, Howard broke Towson's four-game win streak, while extending their streak to four, to open the doubleheader in Tigers Softball Stadium. 

Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, CA) RBI single to right field, scoring Camille Navarro (Los Angles, CA) to score the game's first run in the top of the first inning. 

Sydney Hixenbaugh (Millston, N.J.) got the nod in circle for the Bison, pitched a little over four innings allowed one unearned run, and seven hits while striking out one Tiger. Hixenbaugh held Towson scoreless through the first four innings.

Dennis broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI single to left field, scoring Navarro to take the lead, 2-1. Natalie Davila (Carson, CA) Savanna Rainey (Madison, WI), and Neveah Castruita (South El Monte, CA) each recorded an RBI single to extend the lead, 5-1. 

Towson answers right back with a three-run, sixth inning to close the gap, 5-4. 

Undeterred the Bison added three insurance runs, thanks to a Navarro RBI single, and Davila two-RBI single to the right field. 

Kiana Carr (Phoenix, AZ) entered the contest in the fourth inning, gave up three runs on three hits. Carr shutdown Towson in the seventh inning. After, giving up a single, she sat down the next three batters to record her fourth straight victory. 

Navarro recorded three hits, an RBI, and scored three times to lead the offense. 

GAME 2, 4-2 (6)

Howard's defense thwarts any Towson comeback, for a 4-2 victory, Wednesday afternoon at Tigers Softball Stadium to push their win streak to six. 

At one point four consecutive groundballs found their way into Beard gloves for routine putouts. 

Davila, got the scoring started for the Bison, scoring Te'la Beard after being hit by pitch. 

Howard's Dennis cleared the bases, taking an 0-2 pitch, with two outs to deep centerfield for a three-RBI double to extend the lead, 4-1. 

Towson Bre McDowell got the nod in the circle, recorded her second loss of the season, held the Bison to one hit the rest of the way. 

Howard's Tracy Mosley got the start for the Bison, pitched just under four innings, giving up two hits and an earned run, walked and hit three Tigers, recording her third win of the season. Kiana Carr recorded her second save of the season pitch two innings, allowed three hits, and gave up a homerun, while striking out one.

Howard returns to the Nationals Youth Park for a four-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup versus Delaware State Univesity Lady Hornets, Saturday and Sunday, March 13-14. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 pm, while Sunday's doubleheader begins at noon.
