Washington, D.C.: Howard University Bison fell in a back and forth affair to the Morgan State University Lady Bears 65-61, in a Sunday matinee in Burr Gymnasium.
Howard fell to 9-3 on the season, and 5-2 in the MEAC, while Morgan State improved to 9-3, 6-3 in the MEAC, and took a half-game lead for the Northern Division crown.
The loss ended a four-game winning streak and snapped an eight-game home winning streak, dating to last season.
Howard's lone senior standout, Jayla Thornton, broke the MEAC all-time 3-point made career record in the third quarter off a dish from Iyanna Warren to tie the game at 35 at the 6:58 mark.
Morgan State took the early lead in an evenly matched game and maintained it through the first half going into intermission. Like yesterday's game, this contest came down to the second half.
Howard came out strong to start the third quarter, going on a 10-4 run to tie the game at 33 a-piece with 6:53 remaining in the third quarter. Both squads traded baskets over the next five minutes to keep the score tied at 43, with an Anzhane' Hutton putback and took the lead on Hutton's ensuing free throw, to take a 44-43 lead with 1:51 left in the third quarter.
The Bison and Lady Bears traded leads in three consecutive possessions. Morgan St. took the lead for good on a Dahney Redd jumper in the paint to take a 45-44 lead, ending the quarter on a 7-3 run to extend the lead, 50-46.
Howard kept pace with Morgan State, using a 15-13 run to close the gap 63-61, with 12 seconds to go. After a Bison timeout, HU had an opportunity to either tie or take the lead, but a turnover under the basket sealed Morgan State's win.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Three Bison scored in double-figures led by Iyanna Warren (17), Anzhane' Hutton (15), Jayla Thornton (12)
- Brooklyn Fort-Davis brought down a game-high 11 rebounds, Hutten and Warren each had seven.
- Warren also dished out a game-high eight assists, combining 14 total assists in the past two games.
- The Bison bench was outscored 14-8.
- The Bison struggled from the free-throw line shooting 59 percent from the charity stripe (16-of-27)
- For the first time, the Bison lost at home since falling short to UMES, 71-70 March 2, 2020.
