Softball Sweeps Bowie State in a Twinbill

Howard's Pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts

WASHINGTON, D.C.: Howard University Bison softball team blanks Bowie State University, defeating the Bulldogs 11-0 in game one and 10-0 in game two, Wednesday afternoon at the National Youth Academy. 

After a cold start last week against Army, the Bison came out on fire in perfect weather. 

Howard combined for 27 hits, 21 runs, and 16 RBIs. Howard's Natalie Davila (Carson, Ca.) rocked the Bulldogs, hitting a combined 4-of-6, recording a monster grand slam in the fourth inning of game two.

GAME 1

HU's Kiana Carr (Phoenix, Az) got the nod in the circle and sat down the first three batters.

Howard's offense blitzed the Bulldogs out the gate with three consecutive singles; Savanna Rainey (Madison, Wi,) RBI single to second base brought Camille Navarro (Inglewood, Ca.) across home plate for the first run of the game. Te'La Beard (Stockton, Ca.) joining the RBI parade with a double down the left-field line and Nevaeh Castruita (South El Monte, Ca.) infield single. Howard recorded four runs on six hits and no errors in the top of the first.  

After giving up a walk and a fielder's choice to start the top of the second inning, Carr settled down, striking out the next three batters. 

In the bottom of the third inning, Howard exploded for seven runs on eight hits. 

That was all the defense needed; Carr continued to hinder the Bulldogs' offense, struck out another two batters, and recording her eleventh strikeout for her first victory as a Bison. 

Navarro paced the offense with three hits, an rbi's, and scored twice. Gibbs, Castuita, Davila also recorded two hits. Davila and Rainey recorded two RBIs. 

GAME TWO

Howard's Tracy Mosley (Jonesboro, Ga) pitched a gem, holding Bowie State to no runs and giving up two hits while striking out seven Bulldogs. 

Howard rocked the Bulldogs for 12 hits, scoring ten runs.

Navarro, Jones, Davila, and Beard recorded multiple hits. 

Howard recorded three runs in the third and the fourth inning when Davila put the game away in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a monstrous grand slam over the left-field wall to put Howard over the top 10-0 to take game two in five innings. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Davila recorded six RBIs, four hits, three runs, a home run, and a double for a 1.333 slugging percentage.
  • Gibbs and Swanson recorded a 1.00 slugging percentage; Gibbs recorded three hits, two doubles, a Rbi, and scored twice, while Swanson recorded two hits, a run, and a rbi. 
  • The pitching staff combined for 18 strikeouts and allowed no runs.
  • Tracy Mosley recorded her first career shutout.

Next Up:

  • Howard will travel to Baltimore, Maryland, to square off against UMBC in a weekend doubleheader, the first pitch slated for noon. The contest is the first against Head Coach Tori Tyson. Howard is 6-16 versus the Retrievers.
  • The Retrievers will be kicking off their 2021 campaign.
