Jersey City, N.J.: The Howard University women's basketball team used a solid second-quarter to defeat the Saint Peter's Peacocks 62-52 Sunday afternoon in Run Baby Run Arena.
Howard improved to 1-3, while Saint Peters fell to 1-3.
After a back-and-forth affair in the first quarter, Howard's Destiny Howell [Glen Cove, N.Y.] sparked a 15-4 run, sinking three-long balls in a four-minute span, to take a 29-19 lead with 4:29 left in the half. The Bison would trade basket the rest of the way, with Howard taking a 40-26 lead into halftime for the first time this season.
The Bison dominated the second quarter on both ends of the court. Howard held Saint Peters to 16 percent [2-of-12] shooting from the floor, while 66 percent [10-of-15] shooting from the floor and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. In addition, Howard outscored the Peacocks in the paint, racking up 12 points while limiting Saint Peter's to six.
Both squads played an even second half, with Howard limiting the Peacocks offensively and hitting timely shots to hold off Saint Peter's for the Bison first win of the season.
By the Numbers:
- Anzhane' Hutton [Dallas, Texas] led the Bison offense, recording a season-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting knocking down 5-of-8 from the charity stripe. Howell joined Hutton in double-figures recording her first double-figure output of the season, shooting 4-of-12 from the floor.
- Krislyn Marsh [Houston, Texas] recorded a season-high four steals, a block, and four defensive rebounds.
- Nine different Bison scored.
- Kaniyah Harris [Capital Heights, MD] recorded a career-high 12 rebounds, bringing down a career-high eight defensive rebounds.
- Howard shot a season-best 43.1 percent from the floor while holding Saint Peter's to 22.8 percent.
- The Bison outshot the Peacocks 26-6 from the paint.
