HIGH POINT, N.C. (November 20, 2021) – Howard University men's basketball team dropped its opener at the Legends Classic, falling to the host High Point Panthers (HPU), 73-63.
With the setback, HU fell to 3-2 overall while the Panthers moved to .500 (2-2) on the young season.
Redshirt sophomore
Steve Settle, III (Glenarden, Md.) led the way with a season-high 21 points in the loss.
HPU controlled the first half and held the upper hand throughout, including a double-digit lead on multiple occasions in the period.
Down only five at the break, 34-29, the Bison clawed their way back into the contest.
With more than 13 minutes remaining in the game, graduate
Tai Bibbs (Chicago) gave HU its first lead of the game, 42-41.
High Point regained the momentum and reclaimed the lead, 55-53, with under six minutes play.
Freshman
Elijah Hawks (Washington, D.C.) tied the game with more than three minutes left, 60-60, but High Point closed out the game on a 13-3 run to win their second contest of the season.
Graduate Randy Brumant finished the afternoon with 10 points, six boards and three blocks.
For HPU, John-Michael Wright had 20 points while Zach Austin and Jaden House each contributed 14 points in the win.
HU takes on William & Mary in the Legends Classic consolation game Sunday (Nov. 21). Tipoff at 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
