DENTON, TX -- Howard University women's basketball falls to the University of North Texas 94-56 in the Super Pit, Thursday night.
The Bison fell to 0-2, while the Mean Green improved to 2-0 to open the season.
Howard jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on a
Gia Thorpe [Pittsburgh, Pa.] layup right out the gate. However, the Mean Green answered back on a mid-range jumper to tie the game and spark a 13-2 run over the next three-minute to take a 15-4 lead at the 6:42 minute mark.
Iyanna Warren [Accokeek, MD] paused the bleeding knocking down a pair of free throws that sparked an 11-3 run to cut the lead, 18-15, with 3:49 minutes left in the first quarter.
North Texas proceeded with a 15-0 run before Howard closed the quarter with a long three-point shot by
Destiny Howell [Queens, N.Y.] with five seconds remaining.
UNT opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 22 with five minutes left in the first half. Howard and North Texas traded baskets the rest of the way. The Mean Green took a 53-31 lead into intermission.
North Texas opened the second half with two straight three-point shots to extend the lead, 59-31 two minutes into the third quarter. Then, Howard went on a 15-2 run to cut the lead 61-43 with 4:26 left in the third quarter. However, the Mean Green ended the quarter outscoring the Bison 11-5 to take a 72-48 advantage into the fourth and cruising to their second win of the season, defeating Howard 94-56.
Warren led the Bison offense recorded 19 points and four assists, two points shy of a career-high. Hutton recorded 11 points and seven rebounds.
Krislyn Marsh [Houston, TX] recorded seven rebounds.
