PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (October 24, 2021) – Howard University women's volleyball team erased another early match deficit on the road, knocking off conference rival Maryland Eastern Shore in four sets (24-26, 25-18, 25-22, 32-30).
With the victory, HU (9-11, 6-2 MEAC) ended its five-match road swing with a 4-1 mark while taking sole possession of second place in the league standings.
Third-year Bison
Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.) led the way with a double-double, producing 10 kills and a career-high 10 total blocks (two solo).
HU was on the verge of taking an early match lead in game one but hitting errors down the stretch gave Eastern Shore momentum to steal set one, 24-26.
Howard rebounded, cruising in game two, 25-18, while tying the contest at one apiece.
In the pivotal third set, Eastern Shore took the slight edge midway through game three, 13-14, but the Bison went on a 6-1 spurt to regain control and win set three, 25-22.
In an epic game four, the Hawks continued to prolong the match, forcing HU to win by two. Down the stretch, Eastern Shore committed a pair of hitting errors to give the Bison their third straight win.
Texas natives
Kailyn Williams (Arlington) and
Bria Woodard (Missouri City) posted 11 kills apiece while junior setter
Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) filled the stat sheet with 29 assists, five digs, four total blocks and a pair of kills.
Defensively, junior
Essence Bell (Ocala, Fla.) had a team-leading 16 digs, along with a career-best seven assists in the victory.
For Maryland Eastern Shore (10-10, 5-4 MEAC), Marina Cruz and Maya Hendricks registered nine kills apiece in the loss.
Tuesday (Oct. 26), Howard hosts conference-leading Delaware State for White Out night. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Burr Gymnasium.
