WASHINGTON (October 24, 2021) – Howard University women's soccer team played their final home contest of the season, topping Mount St. Mary's (Md.) in OT, 2-1, at Greene Stadium.
With the win, HU improved to 6-5-2 (5-3-1 NEC) on the season while moving into sole possession of fourth in the standings.
Howard outshot The Mount, 17-12, and took four corner kicks compared to only one from Mount St. Mary's (MSM).
After a scoreless first half, newcomer
Kyra Bolden (McLean, Va.) put HU on the board after delivering a shot in the top right corner, 1-0.
At the 71' mark, MSM's Maria Buonomo scored off a header from Elisabeth Rockhill and tied the match at one apiece; thus, forcing OT.
In overtime, senior
Thalia Boucher (Toronto, Canada) gave sophomore
Nyla Allen (Elmont, N.Y.) the perfect pass off a free kick to secure HU a winning conference record.
The physical play between the newly Northeast Conference rivals saw 35 fouls, including one yellow card.
Graduate goalkeeper
Alayah Hightower (Mitchellville, Md.) recorded four saves in the win.
On Halloween (Oct. 31), Howard closes out the regular season at Fairleigh Dickinson. Match time is scheduled for noon.
