WASHINGTON, D.C.: Jayla Thornton knocked down a season-high seven three-pointers, while Iyanna Warren dished out a career-high 14 dimes, as the Howard University Bison (8-2, 5-1 MEAC) defeated Delaware State University Hornets 71-60, Saturday afternoon in Burr Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPEN:
The Bison used an 11-4 run over the final five minutes of regulation to put the Hornets(2-8, 1-5 MEAC) away.
Thornton (Newark, N.J) got the day started sinking her first three-pointer to take the early lead, 3-0.
DSU scored four unanswered points when Thornton took Howard on a 5-0 run to regain the lead, 8-4.
Delaware State tied the game at 11 apiece on a backdoor layup to open up the second quarter. Thorton broke the tie for good with three consecutive long-range jumpers to grab a 20-13 lead.
The Bison and Hornets traded baskets the rest of the way, with Howard outpacing Delaware State 15-10, to a 32-23 halftime lead. Thornton recorded 17 first-half points, Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.) was a floor general in the first half dishing out eight assists. Fr. Anzhane' continues her strong presence under the boards securing nine rebounds.
Returning from intermission, Thornton and Warren connected on a long shot to extend the lead, 35-23. The Hornets answered right back, knocking down a trey of their own, sparking a 7-0 run to cut the lead, 35-30.
HU and DSU would trade baskets until the Hornets started swarming back with nine minutes to go in the regulation when Sha Collins, three from the wing and a jumper in the paint, cut the lead, 54-52.
A Makayla Minett (Chicago, Ill.) layup stops the bleeding. The two squads would trade basket when three consecutive turnovers by the Hornets sparked a 7-0 run cemented by Brooklyn Fort-Davis three-pointer from the wing to take a 69-58 lead with three minutes remaining.
The Bison cruised the rest of the way for a 71-60 victory for their third straight victory and fifth straight over the Hornets.
