Farrell Nominated for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award

Four-time MEAC champion represents HU

INDIANAPOLIS (July 15, 2020) – Howard University setter and recent graduate Jurnee Farrell (Englewood, Colo.) was selected as a nominee for the 2020 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Woman of the Year award for her academic achievements, athletic excellence, community service and leadership. The announcement came Tuesday afternoon.

Rooted in Title IX and directed by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, the NCAA Woman of the Year program celebrates the accomplishments of female college athletes across all three NCAA divisions.

Farrell, a four-year member of the women's volleyball team, won four consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships during her time and chose HU because of its rich culture.

Academically, she was selected to the MEAC Commissioner's All-Academic Team twice (2017 & 2019).

In her senior campaign, Farrell missed the 2019 MEAC Women's Volleyball Tournament to undergo a stem cell donation with Be the Match. The procedure saved a 57-year-old woman with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

In Spring 2020, she graduated from The Mecca with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. After graduation, Farrell plans to pursue a master's degree in forensic investigation at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla.

Nearly 220,000 women were competing in college sports during the 2019-20 campaign, and the NCAA received a program-record 605 nominations for this prestigious award.

The NCAA Woman of the Year Selection Committee identifies the top 10 honorees in each of the three NCAA divisions. From those 30 honorees, the selection committee then determines the three finalists in each division for a total of nine finalists.

The Committee on Women's Athletics will select the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year from the nine finalists. The 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced this fall.
