Senior Profile Featuring Hollie Cartwright

A talk with champion Hollie Cartwright

WASHINGTON (July 14, 2020) – Howard University senior Tiffany Hunt caught up with recent graduate Hollie Cartwright (Cary, N.C.) from the women's soccer team, asking 10 questions for the 2019-20 Senior Spotlight series.

Q: What's your favorite part about soccer?
A: My favorite part about soccer is playing because I love the feeling of butterflies while getting pumped before a match. I appreciate the level of contact in the sport and being able to show off my athleticism.

Q: How did you get started in soccer?
A: I started playing soccer at age four after my mother saw a soccer registration sign. So, she signed me up immediately because she wanted me to be active in sports. I became really good and enjoyed playing the sport.

Q: What kept you motivated?
A: I genuinely enjoyed playing the sport while continuing to get better, that kept me motivated. My goal was to play at a high level.

Q: If you were not competing in soccer, what other sport would you do?
A: I would have played volleyball because I played three years of competitive volleyball in middle school. During my freshman year in high school, I was set to compete for a travel team in Atlanta; however, I moved. Despite not pursuing volleyball, I appreciate the nature of the sport.

Q: Who is your favorite athlete and why?
A: My favorite athlete is LeBron James because he's one of the best basketball players in the world. He's also a great role model to young African-American children while giving back to his community, which I admire and appreciate.

Q: What's your favorite memory at Howard?
A: My favorite Howard memory was winning the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship with my teammates because the moment was so exciting. One of my goals was winning a conference tournament.

Q: Plans after graduation?
A:  In the fall, I'll be pursuing a master's degree in Public Administration at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). Also, I'll be working and preparing to raise my incoming child.

Q: What or who will you miss at Howard?
A: I will miss Dr. Trevor Leiba (Howard Director of Student Affairs) so much because he guided me in changing my major to health science. He has been a pivotal person in providing advice when needed while helping me graduate with honors.

Q: What advice would you give future Bison?
A: My advice to future Bison is to stay focus because it's easy to get distracted. Be sure to have fun but make time to handle your business in the classroom.

Also, take advantage of the vast opportunities that Howard has to offer.

Q: Who would you like to thank?
A: I would like to thank Dr. Leiba, Mr. Paul Bowden (Howard Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services), my coach Brent Leiba (Howard women's soccer head coach) and professors for instilling knowledge in me. I'm extremely grateful to be part of the HBCU atmosphere at Howard.
