WASHINGTON (March 12, 2020) – Howard University softball team earned a split in their home opener against Saint Peter's at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy complex. After dropping game one, 1-3, the Bison responded with an 8-0 victory in the nightcap.
GAME TWO
Before Thursday's nightcap, HU recognized seniors on both teams after the conference's announcement regarding suspension of all spring sports.
HU produced eight runs on 15 hits in game two with eight Bison recording a hit. Freshman
Taylor Ferguson (Elk Grove, Calif.) led the way, going a perfect 3-of-3 with a run scored.
Howard scored four times in the second and took a commanding 4-0 advantage.
HU tallied four more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double from
Xzarria Simmons (Escondido, Calif.), 8-0.
Simmons, sophomores
Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) and
Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) and freshmen
Te'La Beard (Bakersfield, Calif.) and
Natalie Davila (Carson, Calif.) each had two hits apiece.
Redshirt junior
Brooke Thomas (Detroit) tossed a gem, throwing five scoreless innings while allowing only four hits in the victory.
GAME ONE
HU registered only three hits in game one, led by sophomore
Ayana Sallee (Chesapeake, Va.) going 2-of-3 with a stolen base.
After five scoreless innings, Saint Peter's got on the board first, 1-0, but Howard answered with Simmon's RBI-ground out scoring Beard, 1-1.
Saint Peter's scored twice in the seventh to take game one.
Sophomore
Sydney Hixenbaugh (Millstone, N.J.) threw seven innings, including five scoreless, in a losing effort.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, all spring sports competitions, including softball, are being suspended through the end of the Spring 2020 semester.
