Softball Suffers Setbacks at the Hampton Classic

Late big innings down Bison

HAMPTON, Va. (March 1, 2020) – Howard University softball team suffered a pair of setbacks at the Hampton Classic, hosted by the Lady Pirates. HU dropped the rematch to Morehead State, 6-13, and a 5-7 outcome versus Hampton.

GAME ONE

Howard scored six runs on eight hits but stranded seven runners. Sophomore Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) continued her momentum from Friday (Feb. 28), going 3-of-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Fellow classmate Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) also had an outstanding game, scoring twice while recording two doubles in the loss.

First inning saw Morehead State score twice, 2-0, but the Bison responded with three runs in the bottom half and took a 3-2 advantage after one.

Morehead State reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the second, 3-4, and added two more in the fifth, 3-6. Bottom five, HU sliced the margin down to one, 5-6, thanks to sac flies from junior Trinity Gibbs (Kissimmee, Fla.) and sophomore Xzarria Simmons (Escondido, Calif.).

Innings six and seven put the contest out-of-reach after the Eagles scored seven times in those frames combined.

GAME TWO

Howard tallied five runs on 10 hits, but like game one, left seven runners on base.

Navarro, Simmons and freshman catcher Luz Aguilasocho (Grand Terrace, Calif.) each produced two hits in a losing effort.

Hampton scored twice in the opening inning and held a 2-0 advantage through four until Simmons and newcomer Te'La Beard (Bakersfield, Calif.) each drove in a run and tied the contest after five, 2-2.

Second-year outfielder Ayana Sallee (Chesapeake, Va.) delivered a go-ahead homer to center in the sixth, 3-2, followed by a two-run single from Dennis to extend the lead top seven, 5-2.

Bottom seven, Hampton rallied with a five-run inning, capped off by a walk-off homer, 5-7.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

On March 6-7, the Bison return to Durham, N.C. for the Duke Invitational, hosted by the Blue Devils.
