ATHENS, Ga. (February 8, 2020) – Howard University softball team fell to Kent State (KSU), 1-8, on Day Two of the annual Black and Red Showcase after more than a five-hour snow delay. The contest started approximately 10:30 a.m. and did not resume until around 4 p.m.
With the stoppage, HU's rematch versus UNC Wilmington scheduled for Saturday (Feb. 8) at 6 p.m. was cancelled.
Before the long halt, Howard grabbed the upper hand on a throwing error that scored newcomer
Te'La Beard (Bakersfield, Calif.), 1-0. Moments later, the game was stopped because of inclement weather.
The contest resumed over five hours later, but HU lost all momentum. Kent State's first at-bat saw five runs on four hit while taking a 5-1 advantage after one.
KSU scored an unearned run in the second, followed by a pair of fourth-inning scores (one unearned) that put the game out-of-reach.
Junior
Trinity Gibbs (Kissimmee, Fla.) and sophomore
Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) each delivered a single while Beard walked twice in the loss.
For Kent State (2-1), Andrea Scali tossed seven innings while striking out 11 hitters in the win.
With today's events behind them, the Bison look to refocus and prepare for two rematches against KSU and No. 17 Georgia (UGA) Sunday (Feb. 9). The action begins 10 a.m. against Kent State, followed by a 3 p.m. start time versus the Bulldogs.
