WASHINGTON (February 19, 2020) – This week's Bison Brief edition features news from women's bowling, softball, men's and women's track & field and more.

WOMEN'S BOWLING
 
Howard University women's bowling team saw success on the lanes at the James Brown Invitational (Feb. 14-16), hosted by Morgan State, where the squad finish fifth overall after going 8-5 for the weekend.
 
Third-year bowler Carolyn Williams (Glen Burnie, Md.) led the way in traditional competition, averaging a 187.6 in five matches. Sophomores Jahnia Phillips (Elmont, N.Y.) and Jayla Webster (Woodbridge, Va.) followed suit, producing 184.4 and 181.8 averages, respectively.
 
On Feb. 21-23, the Bison head down to Pensacola, Fla., to compete in the second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) meet of the year, hosted by Florida A&M University.
 
SOFTBALL
 
The team competed at the Campbell Invitational in North Carolina (Feb. 14-16) and started with two early losses. Both St. Francis (Pa.) and Bucknell defeated HU, 6-10 and 4-5, respectively.
 
On Day Two, St. Francis once again got the best of the Bison, winning 5-6. Despite the loss, the game did feature a career-high three stolen bases and three scores from sophomore Camille Navarro (Los Angeles).
 
The Bison earned their first win of the season on Day Three, defeating Mount St. Mary's, 12-4. The team was led by freshman catcher Luz Aguilasocho (Grand Terrace, Calif.), who went 2-of-4 with a career-high four RBIs.
 
The second game of the day went to Campbell with a final score of 0-8. Freshman Te'La Beard (Bakersfield, Calif.) went 2-of-2 in the loss against the Campbell Camels.
 
Adding to their high of earning win No. 1, Aguilasocho was named MEAC Rookie of the Week.
 
On Feb. 21-22, the Bison travel down to Montgomery, Ala., for the Stringer Classic, hosted by Alabama State.
 
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
 
On Feb. 14-15, the men's track and field team found themselves in Lynchburg, Va., for the Darius Dixon Invitational, which was hosted by Liberty University.
 
In the final competition before the MEAC Championships, freshman Ian Wheeler (Houston) landed fourth place with his 3.98-meter pole vault, earning a spot at the competition in Landover. Sophomore Jermanie Byrd (Miami) also placed fourth in the conference by clocking an 8.08 time in the 60-meter hurdles.
 
The next meet will be the MEAC Indoor Championships, held Feb. 27-29 in Landover, Md., concluding the indoor track season.
 
WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
 
The women had a good showing at the Darius Dixon Invitational (Feb. 14-15) in Lynchburg, Va., with three student-athletes recording a new personal best.
 
Junior Jessika Gbai (Philadelphia) is now boasting a school record 23.78 time for the women's 200-meter dash, making her seventh in the conference. Ozioma Scott (Guyana, Georgetown), also a junior, accomplished the league's sixth-fastest time in the 400-meter dash (55.44). Sophomore Ja'Tae Joyner (Bowie, Md.) got her new personal best in women's long jump (5.83 meters) and now holds the third-best mark in the MEAC.
 
The indoor track season will end with the MEAC Indoor Championships (Feb. 27-29) in Landover, Md.
