Softball Grabs First Win of the Season

Bison split on final day of the Campbell Invitational

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (February 16, 2020) – Howard University softball team grabbed its first win of the season after knocking off Mount St. Mary's, 12-4, at the Campbell (CU) Invitational, hosted by the Camels. Sunday saw HU pick up a split on the final day after falling to CU in the nightcap, 0-8.

Howard racked up 12 runs on 11 hits in game one, led by freshman catcher Luz Aguilasocho (Grand Terrace, Calif.) going 2-of-4 with a career-high four RBIs in the win.

Both squads were deadlocked, 1-1, until HU scored twice in the fourth to take their first lead, 3-1.

Top five saw the Bison explode for five runs, capped off by two-run singles by Aguilasocho and fellow classmate Taylor Ferguson (Elk Grove, Calif.), 8-1.

Mount St. Mary's fought back with three unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth combined, 8-4, but Howard delivered the knockout blow with a four-run seventh inning, highlighted by two-run doubles from Aguilasocho and sophomore slugger Xzarria Simmons (Escondido, Calif.), 12-4.

In the nightcap, freshman Te'La Beard (Bakersfield, Calif.) went a perfect 2-of-2 in the loss at Campbell.

CU ended the contest early with a two-run homer by Kynadi Tipler, 0-8.

On Feb. 21-22, the Bison travel down to Montgomery, Ala., for the Stringer Classic, hosted by Alabama State.
