WASHINGTON (February 12, 2020) – This week's Bison Brief edition features news from men's and women's basketball, women's bowling, football, women's lacrosse, softball, men's and women's track & field and more.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
 
The men's basketball team fell in overtime to the Florida A&M (FAMU) Rattlers, 82-78, in the Al Lawson Center Saturday (Feb. 8). Seniors Nate Garvey (Nanuet, N.Y.), Charles Williams (Richmond, Va.), and Phillip Jones (Atlanta, Ga.), along with freshman Wayne Bristol, Jr. (Upper Marlboro, Md.) all scored in double figures.
 
Hoping to leave Florida with a win, the team played Bethune-Cookman Monday (Feb. 10), but lost, 87-68. Williams led with 20 points and Bristol, Jr. followed with 14 in the loss.
 
Continuing the road trip, the team will head to Greensboro, N.C. to play North Carolina A&T State (NCAT) Saturday (Feb. 22) at 4 p.m., followed by at 7:30 p.m. start time at North Carolina Central.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
In a decisive win over FAMU, Howard left the Al Lawson Center with yet another road win after an 82-56 victory. Sophomore Gia Thorpe (Pittsburgh) and freshman Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.) combined for 38 points.
 
Unfortunately, this momentum did not carry over to Moore Gymnasium where the Bison fell to Bethune-Cookman, 59-88. Junior Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.) led the team with 13 points.
 
Next, the team will try its luck in North Carolina against NCAT Saturday (Feb. 22) at 2 p.m., followed by a 5:30 tipoff at North Carolina Central.
 
WOMEN'S BOWLING
 
The women's bowling team competed at the Griffin Baker Classic, which was hosted by Chestnut Hill College (Feb. 7-9). They finished 9-4, earning eighth overall in the event.
 
On Feb. 14-16, we will see the Bison in Towson, Md., for the James Brown Invitational, hosted by Morgan State.
 
FOOTBALL
 
On Feb. 5, the football team secured four new Bison on National Signing Day, along with two additional early signees. Three of the recruits are defensive linemen, two are versatile players, and one is an offensive lineman. They represent the states of Virginia, Florida, and Missouri.
 
The next day (Feb. 6), Larry Scott was announced head coach of the program. His coaching experience includes positions at Miami, Tennessee, South Florida and most recently Florida.
 
HU begins its 2020 campaign in the fall.
 
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
 
The lacrosse team opened its season with a loss against the Presbyterian Bluehose Friday (Feb. 7) in Bailey Memorial Stadium.
 
In the 19-5 defeat, all five points for the Bison were scored by freshmen: Josie Mallory (Charlottesville, Va.) and Quai Skeete-Ridley (New Carrollton, Md.) each scored twice and Sydney Kates (Cleveland) scored the last goal.
 
Two days later (Feb. 9), HU fell on the road at Gardner-Webb, 19-3. Mallory scored a pair of goals in the loss.
 
The team will get its next opportunity on the field Sunday (March 1) when they host Delaware State in their home opener. Game time is set for 1 p.m. inside Greene Stadium.
 
SOFTBALL
 
It was a tough season opener for the softball team at the Red and Black Showcase (Feb. 7-9). Kent State, Georgia, and UNCW all earned victories against the Bison, leaving the team 0-5 for the season. Despite the losses, sophomore Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) recorded a .429 batting average with six hits and two stolen bases, including a perfect 3-for-3 against Kent State.
 
The next games will be at the Campbell Invitational, hosted by the Camels, (Feb. 14-16) in North Carolina.
 
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
 
On Feb. 7-8, the South Carolina Invitational, hosted by the Gamecocks, proved to be a challenge for the Bison. Sophomores Jermanie Byrd (Miami) and Kameron Davis (Miami) both set personal best in their events. The teammates will be advancing to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships in Landover, Md. (Feb. 27-29).
 
The team's next time out will be the Darius Dixon Invitational, hosted by Liberty, (Feb. 14-15) in Lynchburg, Va.
 
WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
 
The women also took advantage of the competition at the South Carolina Invitational (Feb. 7-8) by setting two new school records. Junior Jessika Gbai and freshman Dasia Wilson, both Philadelphia natives, were able to break the 200-meter dash (24.14) and the 800-meter run (2:10.09) records, respectively.
 
The 200-meter dash also produced favorable results for seniors Oluchi Ike (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Uchechi Onuoha (Yardley, Pa.), who qualified for the MEAC Indoor Championships in this event.
 
The final competition before the conference championships, the Darius Dixon Invitational, takes place this weekend (Feb. 14-15) in Lynchburg, Va.
