Women’s Basketball Suffers Road Loss at Bethune-Cookman

Bison unable to overcome tough shooting night

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 10, 2020) – Howard University women's basketball team suffered a 59-88 road loss at Bethune-Cookman (B-CU) inside historic Moore Gymnasium. With the setback, HU dropped to 14-10 (6-5 MEAC) on the season.

Offensively, the Bison were unable to get into a rhythm. HU shot just under 28-percent (21-of-76), including 21-percent (3-of-14) beyond the arc, but continued to attack the basket where they shot 70-percent (14-of-20), collectively.

Despite the tough shooting night, 10 Bison scored in the contest, led by third-year guard Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.) with 13 points in the loss.

HU trailed double digits after a sluggish first quarter, 9-23, and could not close the gap before intermission with both clubs scoring 18 points apiece in the second, 27-41.

After halftime, sophomore forward Krislyn Marsh (Duncanville, Texas) made a layup and pulled the Bison within 10 in the third, 35-45, but unable to get any closer.

In the fourth, B-CU outscored HU, 11-27, after shooting 50-percent (8-of-16) from the floor and 80-percent (8-of-10) at the charity stripe.

Howard outrebounded the Wildcats, 48-47, with Marsh grabbing a game-high 12 boards.

For Bethune-Cookman (17-5, 9-1 MEAC), they have won nine straight games after dropping their conference opener at Norfolk State (Jan. 4). Five Wildcats reached double figures, led by Ashanti Hunt with a game-high 20 points in the win.

Howard returns to the hardwood Saturday (Feb. 22) and Monday (Feb. 24) when they travel down to the Tar Heel state to face North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central.
