WASHINGTON (September 22, 2019) – Howard University women's volleyball team ended its nonconference slate with a 3-0 loss (15-25, 17-25, 20-25) at the hands of crosstown rival Georgetown (GU) inside McDonough Arena.
HU wraps up the weekend with a 1-2 mark after hosting Power Five foes Ole Miss (Sept. 20) and Rutgers (Sept. 21) at The Burr.
"We had some struggles today," said Howard women's volleyball head coach
Shaun Kupferberg. "But I was happy with the way Macy [Witt-Nobles] and KJ [
Kailyn Williams] stepped up [today].
In two sets, sophomore
Kailyn Williams (Arlington, Texas) produced five kills and a pair of digs while newcomer
Macy Witt-Nobles (Rosharon, Texas) added four kills with a .364 hitting percentage.
Senior middle blocker
Kira Porter (Lake Tahoe, Nev.) delivered a kill that tied the first set, 7-7, but the Hoyas scored three straight points to regain the lead, 10-7, and finished the game on a 15-8 run.
GU controlled and won set two, 25-17, but the Bison refused to go away in game three. HU grabbed the upper hand early, but the Hoyas' Iva Vujosevic lifted Georgetown to victory, tallying six kills in the deciding set.
Porter ended the afternoon with four blocks (one solo) and three kills while freshman
Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.) generated a team-leading six kills in the loss.
For Georgetown, Vujosevic registered a double-double with 13 kills (match-high) and 13 digs (match-high), along with five service aces in the win.
"There have been opportunities for lots of different people to play this year," Kupferberg added. "No one has really separated themselves. It will be interesting to see who will be on the court in November."
Howard opens league play on the road in Florida where Bethune-Cookman (Sept. 27) and Florida A&M (Sept. 29) await. Friday's showdown with the Wildcats start at 6 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. serve time against the Rattlers.
