ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (May 9, 2019) – Howard University softball suffered a setback after falling to Bethune-Cookman, 9-1, in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament. With the loss, HU moves to the loser's bracket where they will face North Carolina A&T State in an elimination game today at 5:30 p.m.
Bethune-Cookman (B-CU) jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the second, 5-0. B-CU kept the pressure on, scoring four more times in the fourth, 9-0.
In the fifth, freshman
Ayana Sallee (Chesapeake, Va.) delivered a pinch hit sac fly to center to bring home fellow classmate
Sienna Herrera (Conora, Calif.) and put HU on the board, 9-1.
Howard managed four hits, including a leadoff double from newcomer
Jackie Jones (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) in the fifth.
For B-CU (24-28), the reigning champions produced nine runs on nine hits while MEAC Pitcher of the Year Alexis Bermudez tossing five innings and struck out three Bison.
With a victory over the Aggies (9-30), HU advances to Friday (May 10) where they await the winner between Norfolk State and North Carolina Central. First-pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
