Princess Anne, Md. - Howard University Softball split today's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader against the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks in the rescheduled matchup at Hawk Field.
Freshman standout
Kalita Dennis opened the board with a homerun to left field in game one. Her two RBIs were followed by
Xzarria Simmons single up the middle to bring
Camille Navarro across the plate. All of the first inning action put the Bison up 3-0.Â
The Hawks responded in the bottom of the first, tying the game 3-3.Â
Up to bat in the third inning,
Mackenzie Soper homered to right field, increasing the score to 4-3. The fourth inning was quiet; however,
Sienna Herrera delivered in the fifth inning. Her double to right field allowed Navarro and
Noel Merritt to score.Â
Down 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth, the Hawks turned around the momentum. Maryland Eastern Shore scored four runs to take the lead, 8-6. The Bison responded in the seventh inning but fell just short of a comeback. The Hawks won game one, 8-7.Â
The Bison started strong in game two with Brenana Robinson,
Xzarria Simmons and
Camille Navarro all scoring in the top of the first inning. Simmons opened the game with a single along the infield line allowing
Kalita Dennis and Kamaryn Tilman to score. The Bison continued with Navarro tripling to center field and Robinson hitting a homerun, giving the Bison a 5-0 lead.
Eastern Shore attempted to keep up with the Bison. Breana Florez and Rachel Gingrich scored and a fielding error gave the Hawks an extra point, with the Bison leading the Hawks.Â
Up 6-3 in the second inning, the Bison continue to lead with Simmons scoring on a wild pitch.
In the fourth inning the Bison remained impressive offensively with
Trinity Gibbs hitting a single up the middle allowing
Ayana Sallee to score, giving the bison a 12-4 lead. However, the Hawks continued to play hard with Daeshia Jones hitting a double to left field allowing Allison Gingrich to score.
Howard successfully closed the game in the fifth inning. Robinson singled to left field, advancing Navarro to second and bringing home Simmons. The 13-4 lead in the fifth inning proved too out of range to make a comeback. After the Hawks scored on an error by the infield that allowed Kendal Turner to score, the game ended Bison the game with a 13-5 victory.
Howard's game scheduled for Wednesday, April 26 versus Drexel has been postponed. The Bison will hit the road and head to Norfolk, Va to battle the Spartans in a three-game series set for April 27-28.
