WASHINGTON (April 11, 2019) – Basketball's
RJ Cole (Union, N.J.) and softball's
Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) earned Howard University Bison of the Month, sponsored by Kimpton Carlyle Hotel Dupont Circle and Kimpton Glover Park Hotel, for their astonishing performances in March. The announcement came Thursday evening.
Men's Basketball-RJ Cole-Sophomore-Union, N.J.
On March 4, Cole was named BOXTOROW National Player of the Week. A day later (March 5), he was awarded his fifth MEAC Player of the Week honors. Cole hit the game winning shot against Norfolk State (March 7), which gave the Bison their fourth straight win. The win also gave the team an 8-0 record on the road in conference play. On March 8, he was named the MEAC Player of the Year and was named First Team All-MEAC. Cole finished with 19 points, seven assists, and five rebounds against Norfolk State in the MEAC tournament semifinals (March 15).
Softball-Kalita Dennis-Freshman-Elk Grove, Calif.
Dennis has continued her strong rookie season. She helped the Bison dominate a doubleheader against South Carolina State (March 12), driving in four runs. Dennis guided HU to a split against Saint Peter's (March 14), going two-for-three with a double in the first game. The Bison claimed their first series win over Delaware State since 2010 (March 30) where she went two-for-three with a two run homer in the first game.
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Mekhi Abbott (Men's Track & Field): Abbott participated in the Fred Hardy Invitational (March 30) where he tossed a new personal best in the javelin (51.06m; 167'5").
Oluchi Ike (Women's Track & Field): On March 20, Ike was named the MEAC Track Athlete of the Week after placing a MEAC-best in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.75) at the Charlotte 49er Classic (March 14-16).
KaSandra Kaplan (Women's Swimming): Kaplan participated in the CSCAA National Championships where she set a new school mark in the program's 100 IM (58.15).
Roger Lyn (Men's Tennis): On March 21, Lyn helped the Bison defeat Coppin State for their first victory of the season.
Jayla Thornton (Women's Basketball): On March 5, Thornton was named the MEAC Player of the Week after scoring a career high 33 points against Savannah State and hitting nine threes, which set a program record.
