Howard Softball Drops Three Games in 2019 District Classic

WASHINGTON (March 4, 2019) - The Howard University softball team participated in the 2019 District Classic over the weekend, dropping each of their three games.

The Bison played in a doubleheader on Saturday, facing Bucknell University and Brown University. The Bucknell Bison defeated the Howard Bison, 11-3, to open the classic. The two teams were tied halfway through the fifth inning before Bucknell erupted for eight unanswered runs in the final two frames.

Following their game against Bucknell, the Bison were shut out in their 9-0 defeat against Brown University. Despite the loss, Howard softball head coach Tori Tyson spoke highly of relief pitcher Brooke Thomas after the game. She said, "Brooke has been working hard so it's always good to see someone get the opportunity and take advantage of it."

Thomas made just her second pitching appearance of the season, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit.

On Sunday, the Harvard University Crimson defeated the Bison, 10-2. Rightfielder Kamryn Tillman provided the offense for Howard with a two-run home run in the third inning. Tillman went 3-for-9 with three RBI over the weekend. Mackenzie Soper also enjoyed a productive weekend at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a double.

After three losses in the 2019 District Classic, the Bison now have a 3-14 record. "This weekend we struggled again with the one big inning. I'm more interested in how our girls are going to respond," said coach Tyson. "We have two weeks before conference starts so the goal is to use all the information we learned about ourselves over the past few weeks and grow from it."

The Bison will play a doubleheader against George Washington University on Tuesday, March 5 with games set for noon and 2 p.m.
