WASHINGTON (March 31, 2019) --- Howard University softball fell to Delaware State in a 9-2 loss today at Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
In the first inning the Bison took an early lead after a Hornets error allowed
Kamryn Tillman to get the score. With little action in the second inning, the Hornets' Carissa Thorne got on base in the third inning. Jasmine Melgoza's triple to right center allowed Thorne to tie the score, 1-1. In the same inning Jonah Cunnigan had a single bunt giving Melgoza an opportunity to score, putting the Hornets up 2-1.
Howard's
Xzarria Simmons responded with a single up the middle, advancing Camilla Navarro to second with
Kalita Dennis getting the run. The Bison would be held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Delaware State took over, ultimately winning 9-2.
"Howard hasn't taken a series from Delaware State since 2010 so I'm really impressed with our girls for that," said head coach
Tori Tyson. "Obviously our conversation today was that we have to figure out a way to close out weekends and I understand with 12 freshman it's going to be a learning process. We're really looking forward to preparing for Morgan State. That'll be our next conference series.
Tracy Mosley had an impeccable weekend as well as Kalita so hopefully they're building on and peaking as we move forward through conference play. I'm still super excited by our girls and our conference so far."
The Bison host non-conference opponent Bowie State on Wednesday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
