WASHINGTON (March 1, 2019) - On Saturday, March 2, Howard women's basketball will face-off against the Savannah State Tigers in their second to last regular season game.
LAST TIMEOUT
The Bison women's basketball team defeated the Morgan State Bears, 74-62, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup at Hill Field House in Baltimore on Monday.
Howard forced 18 turnovers, which they turned into 19 points. They added 11 fast break points.
Imani Bryant led the Bison with 16 points and eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
Jayla Thornton added 15 points.
Ayonna Williams and
Asia McCants each added 14 points
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Savannah State has struggled recently, going winless in the past four games. The most recent loss coming against North Carolina A&T, in a close 69-73 rut. This adds to their season of troubles, winning just 6 of their 23 games played. The Georgia based team is ranked ninth in the MEAC conference. Despite this Howard will have to be cautious of defensive specialist Jacquece Alston, who leads not only the Tigers, but MEAC conference in steals, averaging 3.5 in 22 games.
"We've been promoting to the team the importance of taking care of the basketball," said head coach
Ty Grace." Having players like Alston defend you, definitely makes you play smarter and sharper, if you want to limit your turnovers. We will make a conscientious effort to do that."
They will also have to halt the scoring capabilities of Myasia Jones, who averages over 14 points a game.
"We are in the home stretch, so playing on the road is something we are familiar with now. We have to block out the noise and distractions on the road, just lock -in and play Howard basketball. "
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Following this game, the Lady Bison will finish their regular season in Virginia on Thursday March 7, going up against Norfolk State. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
