Baltimore, Md. (February 23, 2019) - Howard women's basketball (15-11, 8-5 MEAC) defeated Coppin State (2-23, 2-11 MEAC) on Saturday, 88-81, in Physical Education Complex Arena.
In the first quarter, a layup by
Krislyn Marsh put the Bison on the board. The two teams exchanged leads as the period opened. As the period closed,
Jayla Thornton put up a three that was just the beginning of a 10-2 run going into the second period. A three-pointer by Thornton at the 5:22 mark widened the score by double digits. The Bison would end the first half, 43-30.
The second period began with Coppin State coming within six of the Bison. The third quarter was met with tougher ball aggression by the Eagles. CSU's Chance Graham had a fastbreak layup that was immediately responded to by Howard. The Bison's five consecutive points catapulted a 48-32 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The final quarter was a fight to the finish. Although Coppin chipped away at Howard's lead, the Bison continued to score, keeping the lead by double digits.
The winning effort was led by junior guard
Sarah Edmond. She had 26 points, six rebounds and two assists. Additional Bison scoring 20-plus points in today's game were
Jayla Thornton with 23 points and
Ayonna Williams with 20 points.
Imani Bryant led the Bison in rebounds with her 12.
Star Fitzgerald-Greer and
Krislyn Marsh both had 7 rebounds.
The Bison continue their road travels to Morgan State on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
