Bison Fall Short Against the Aggies

WASHINGTON (February 16, 2019) - Coach Ty Grace and the Howard Bison women's basketball team struggled with turnovers and came up short, 63-58, to the NC A&T Aggies in a MEAC matchup at Burr Gym on Saturday.

The Bison started slowly and found themselves down 20-14 after the first quarter. With 19 seconds to play in the half, Ayonna Williams made a pair of free throws to put the Bison up 31-28. The Bison got outscored 18-8 in the third quarter, committing six of their 23 turnovers, which led to 10 points for the Aggies. The Aggies turned those miscues into 30 points. "Our guards had 18 of those 23 turnovers. When the people who have the ball the most turn the ball over like that, it's tough to win a ball game," said Coach Ty after the game. "So the turnovers definitely hindered us in that win."

A layup by Chamise Tyler gave the Aggies their biggest lead of the game, 54-39, with 9:18 to play in regulation. But, the Bison wouldn't go away. With 2:02 to go in regulation, Williams hit a jumper to cut the lead to 58-50. Then, she hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 60-58 with 42 seconds to play. With seven seconds to play, Alexus Lessears made one-of-two free throws to give the Aggies a three- point lead, 61-58.

The Bison had a chance to tie the game, but a turnover by Tariah Johnson iced the game. Grace said afterwards that, "we had a chance to win the game, obviously. I think our defense triggered that to put us in that situation. It was a two possession game and we got some big stops but we obviously didn't convert offensively. It's a learning experience."

Williams led the way with a game-high 22 points, three rebounds, and four assists. Johnson added nine points, four rebounds, and two assists.

Cinia McCray scored 22 points and added three rebounds to pace the Aggies. C'Coriea Foy nearly had a triple double, finishing with nine points, eight boards, and seven assists. Rayven Peeples finished with a game-high 10 rebounds and four points.

The Bison host North Carolina Central in their final home game of the season on Monday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
