Howard Falls to Appalachian State

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Howard University Bison fell to the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 81-59, Saturday in Burr Gymnasium.

Charles 'CJ' Williams' (Richmond, Va.)17 points and Nate Garvey's (Nanuet, N.Y.) 11 points paced the Bison offensive attack. While Zion Cousins (Upper Marlboro, Md.) led Howard with eight rebounds.

With the loss, Howard falls to 1-10, while Appalachian State improves to 5-5.

The Mountaineers jumped out the gate connecting on a long ball nine-seconds into the contest taking an early lead, 3-0. Garvey answered back with a three of his own until the officials ruled that his foot was on the line making it a 3-2 contest.

App. State extended the lead to 6-2 on a three-point play the old-fashion way when Isaac Johnson connected on a short-jumper after being fouled in the process.

Howard's Cousin and Bristol Wayne, Jr. (Upper Marlboro, Md.) connected on back-to-back jumpers to tie the game at six apiece with 17:56 on the clock in the first half.

Over the next four minutes, the Mountaineers would take an eight-point advantage until Kyle Foster knocked in a deep three-pointer to close the gap, 27-24 with 6:11 left in the first half.

Appalachian State held Howard scoreless over the next four-minutes in-route to a 10-2 run to extend the lead, 37-26.

HU's Ian Lee (Toronto, Canada) broke the run, connecting on a long ball as the shot clock expired to cut the lead, 37-29. The Mountaineers answered back connecting a 3-point shot of their own to push the lead, 40-29.

The two squads would trade baskets into intermission with App. State taking a 42-30 lead into the locker rooms.

Cousins was the workhorse in the first half, playing the full first-half recording eight points and three rebounds a team-high.

Appalachian State came out the half on an 18-7 run, to extend the lead 60-38 with 14:21 left in regulation.

Howard could not close the gap, despite trading baskets the Bison fell 81-59.

Garvey recorded a career-high 11 points his second double-digit output of the season. Williams 17 point output is his ninth double-digit output of the season.
