WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Howard University Bison could not sustain an early second-half lead, falling to Mount St. Mary's University, 73-56 Saturday evening at Burr Gymnasium.
Howard's Charles "CJ" Williams (Richmond, Va.) paced the Bison recording 13 points, nine rebounds and breaking HU's All-time career scoring record. Wayne Bristol, Jr. (Upper Marlboro, Md.) recorded 12 points, his second double-figure output in consecutive games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountaineers took an early 7-2 lead and extended the lead, 14-7 when Kalil Robinson (Columbia, S.C.) knocked in a jumper to tie the game at 14-14 with 9:30 left in the first half.
- Mount St. Mary's went on a 10-0 run over two minutes during that span, the Mount went 4-of-4 from the floor and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc to take a 24-10 lead.
- Howard answered with a 15-0 run to take the lead. Bristol hit a pair of three-pointers, including one to tie the score at 24-24. Ray Bethea, Jr. (Atlantic City, N.J.) then knocked down a three-pointer from the left corner to give Howard its first lead of the game, he then dunked home a baseline drive to make it a five-point Bison lead. The Mount converted a lay-up off a steal, but Kyle Foster (Hampton, Va.) hit a three-pointer to stretch Howard's advantage to 32-26. The Mountaineers converted a free-throw going into intermission down, for halftime exit score of 32-27.
- In the first half, Howard connected on six three-pointers to keep pace with the Mount St. Mary's. Howard connected on 11-of-26 for a 46 percent compared to the Mountaineers 34 percent (11-of-32).
- Williams opened the second half with another long ball, Mount St. Mary's answered with a 16-10 run to capture the lead, 43-42.
- Howard shooting went cold in the second half, going 9-of-32 from the floor. While the Mountaineer improved, shooting 41 percent and connecting from beyond the arc six times.
- The Bison were in striking distance, down 52-51 when the Mountaineers extended the lead after a 10-0 run with 5:52 remaining. That was all the Mountaineer needed as they cruised past Howard.
- The Mountaineers and the Bison shot under 39 percent. Mount St. Mary's connected on 12 shots from the charity stripe(12-of-14), Howard struggled at the line shooting 7-of-13.
