WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Howard University senior Charles 'CJ' Williams' (Richmond, Va.) last-second shot fell short as the Washington Adventist University Shock escaped with a 71-68 victory in Burr Gymnasium, Tuesday evening.
The Bison commenced the official home opener with an early 8-2 lead on a made three by
Khalil Robinson (Hampton, Va.) at the 17:29 mark. The Shock used a 13-1 run over the next four minutes of play to take a 15-8 lead. Washington Adventist held the lead through intermission holding Howard at a one-point disadvantage heading in the locker room, 35-34.
In the second half, Howard took the lead and led by much as seven points (55-48) within 11 minutes of regulation. WAU tied the game at 56 with less than eight minutes to go on an in the paint jumper by WAU's Derrick Hopkins.
The contest would become a seesaw battle with the Shock prevailing from the charity stripe a pair of made free throws by Xavier Sewell.
Williams led all scorers with 19 points, the Bison received double-digit outputs from Robinson,
Zion Cousins (
Upper Marlboro, Md.), and
Kyle Foster (Hampton, Va.). Cousins brought down a team-high seven rebounds.
WAU bench outscored Howard's, 31-14, and the Shock held the advantage shooting 43% (27-62) from the floor, while they held the Bison to 34% (23-65) for the contest.
