WASHINGTON (November 5, 2019) – The Howard University women's basketball team fell short in their home opener against the La Salle Explorers, 78-62, inside Burr Gymnasium.
With the loss, HU dropped to 0-1 while La Salle improved to 1-0 on the young season.
Senior guard
Ayonna Williams (Washington) led the Bison attack with a team-best 18 points, six boards, three assists and three steals in the loss.
La Salle opened the contest on a 6-0 run, but the Bison quickly responded and took a 17-14 advantage after one.
The second period start with another Explorers run, 7-0, in which HU was unable to regain the momentum after shooting only 29-percent (5-of-17) in the quarter.
After holding an eight-point advantage at the break, 38-30, the Explorers extended the lead to nine, 58-49, with three quarters in the book.
La Salle outscored HU in the fourth quarter, 20-13, to down the Bison.
Second-year forward
Krislyn Marsh (Duncanville, Texas) registered 17 points, six boards and a pair of steals while junior
Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.) and senior
Sarah Edmond (Freeport, N.Y.) poured in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
On the other side of the ball, La Salle's Australian twins Claire and Amy Jacobs combined for 29 points in the win.
The Bison will face the UMBC Retrievers Saturday, November 9 at 1 p.m. in Baltimore.
