Men's Basketball Returns to D.C. to Face American at Bender Arena

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Howard University men's basketball concludes their seventh straight road contest Tuesday, Nov. 26 with a 7:00 p.m. tip against the American University Eagles at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C.


News and Notes:

  • Road swing began in Washington, D.C., at George Washington and will conclude in Washington, D.C., at American University.
  • In between, the District games during the recent road swing the Bison traveled to five different cities, flew out of three different airports, logged over 2,435 miles and clocked in 21 hours and 20 minutes of flight time.  
  • Record Watch: Charles "CJ" Williams is 27 points shy for the most career points (1,933) currently held by James Daniel. 
  • The Bison went 0-4 during the Men Against Breast Cancer (MABC) Invitational, Howard fell to Notre Dame, Toledo, Robert Morris, and Marshall.
  • Zion Cousins has averaged a team-best 5.9 rebounds per game for the Bison.
  • Howard was picked to finish sixth in the 11-team MEAC for the 2019-20 season, according to a poll of the leagues head coaches and sports information directors.
  • The fifth straight game away from Burr Gymnasium, Howard returns to the Mecca Saturday, November 30, versus Mount St. Mary's.

  • The Howard University Bison fell to the Ball State University Cardinals, 100-69 Saturday at the Worthen Arena.
  • Howard's Williams led the Bison in scoring a team-high 18-points the hard way. Williams went 8-for-15 from the floor and 1-for-1 from beyond the arc, recording a season-high five rebounds.
  • Howard's 40 points scored in the second half were the most scored in a half this season.
  • Bethea and Garvey scored a season-high 13 points and 10 points, respectively.

  • American holds a 16-5 advantage.
  • Howard defeated the Eagles last season 85-83 in the Burr. Three Bison scored 20 points, led by Chad Lott with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field. Guard RJ Cole registered a double-double, 21 points, and 10 dimes, while Williams added 20 points in the win. 
  • In the last six games, the home team claimed victories.


About American
:

  • American has not played since Nov. 16 versus St. Francis (Pa.) a 79-76 loss.
  • The Eagles played William & Mary in their home opener on Nov. 8 but have not been back home since. 
  • AU got its first win of the year at GW on Nov. 12 with a Sa'eed Nelson game-winning, buzzer-beating jumper.
  • Nelson leads American with 19 points per game (third in the Patriot League) and is shooting 50 percent from the field.
  • Three others average in double figures in scoring for AU. Jamir Harris, who hit 6-of-9 three-pointers at Saint Francis, averaging 15.5 ppg and notching 11-of-12 free throws.
  • Jacob Boonyasith is averaging 12.5 ppg and Stacy Beckton Jr., has a team-best seven rebounds per game to go with 11.3 ppg.
  • Nelson, the Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year for the second year in a row, has 1,637 points and recently moved into sixth all-time in the AU record books. He needs 19 more points to move into fifth place.
