WASHINGTON (October 29, 2019) - This week's Bison Brief features news about football, men's and women's basketball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, and women's volleyball.

FOOTBALL
 
The football team was defeated by the No. 18 North Carolina A&T State Aggies, 64-6, Saturday (Oct. 26). The team's sole touchdown came from freshman Quinton Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.).
 
The Bison return home for a 1 p.m. game Saturday, November 2 at Greene Stadium against North Carolina Central University.
 
MEN'S BASKETBALL
 
Charles Williams, a senior from Richmond, Virginia, was selected to the 2019 Preseason All-MEAC Men's Basketball First Team Thursday (Oct. 24). With 1,794 career points, Williams is only 139 points away from the record of most career points at Howard University, which is currently held by James Daniel (1,933).
 
Williams will begin his race for the record with the start of the season Tuesday, November 5 against Washington Adventist University in Burr Gymnasium at 5 p.m.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
On Oct. 23, four Bison were recognized by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), receiving 2019-20 Women's Basketball Preseason Honors. Seniors Sarah Edmond (Freeport, N.Y.), Ayonna Williams (Washington), Imani Bryant (Berkeley, Calif.) and junior Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.) were each voted to the All-MEAC Preseason Team.
 
The team will kick off the season with a home game in Burr Gymnasium Tuesday, November 5 against LaSalle at 7 p.m.
 
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
 
The Men's Cross Country team came in fourth at the 2019 MEAC Cross Country Championships Saturday (Oct. 26). Finishing with 145 points, three of the Bison ran a season best at the Delaware State Outreach & Research Center.
 
Gavin Williams (Dover, Del.) led the team with a 12^th-place ranking, but Aaron Coates (Washington) and Ayoade Adebiyi (Virginia Beach, Va.) also placed top 30.
 
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
 
Coming in third, the team tallied 103 points at the 2019 MEAC Cross Country Championships.
 
Melanie White (Orlando, Fla.) led the team with an 11^th-place finish and a personal best. Breanna McDonald (Bethesda, Md.), Dasia Wilson (Philadelphia) and Sydney Benson (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) also ran a season-best, landing them in the top 30 at the meet.
 
MEN'S SOCCER
 
Saturday (Oct. 26), the Men's Soccer Team was able to improve to 2-1 in conference play by defeating Georgia Southern University 3-0. Freshman Joseph Abusada (Houston) scored two of those goals with the final goal coming from senior Andres Gomez (Silver Spring, Md.).

Tuesday (Oct. 29), the Bison fell to St. Bonaventure, 4-2, at Greene Stadium.

Sunday (Nov. 3), Howard travels to Conway, S.C. where the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers await. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
 
WOMEN'S SOCCER
 
Friday (Oct. 25) saw the team's first loss in league play, ending its 16-match winning streak in SWAC play. The team fell, 2-1, to Alabama A&M with the lone goal coming from sophomore Thalia Boucher (Toronto, Canada).
 
The Bison recovered two days later with a 1-0 victory over Alabama State in the final regular season game. Sophomore Arianna Morgan (Oklahoma City, Okla.) scored the only goal with an assist from Boucher.
 
The team will seek its fourth SWAC Tournament title in six years November 7-10 in Houston.
 
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
 
Saturday (Oct. 26) saw the Bison win a close home meet against Mary Washington, 136-126. The team is now 3-0 for the season.
 
On Oct. 22, the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) revealed its weekly honors where Howard University's freshman Miles Simon (Atlanta) took home men's swimmer of the week.
 
Hoping to continue the perfect record, the team faces its next meet at Burr Gymnasium Pool against American University Friday, November 1 at 6 p.m.
 
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
 
With a score of 124-153, the women gained their first loss of the season in a home meet against Mary Washington Saturday (Oct. 26).
 
A chance for redemption comes this Friday (Nov. 1) at Burr in a home meet against American, scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
 
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
 
The Women's Volleyball team had a busy week with two home games this weekend. The team started the weekend by winning a five-set match Friday (Oct. 25) against North Carolina Central University (23-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18, 15-13).
 
The Bison continued the weekend with yet another five-set match Sunday (Oct. 27) against North Carolina A&T State. The victory (25-23, 25-21, 17-25, 20-25, 15-5) left the Bison as the only undefeated team in the MEAC at 9-0.
 
The team finished the week with an honor for its very own Kira Porter, a senior from Lake Tahoe, NV. She was named MEAC Player of the Week Monday (Oct. 28) after her impressive performance this past weekend.
 
The next two games are in Baltimore Friday (Nov. 1) and Sunday (Nov. 3) against Morgan State at 6 p.m. and Coppin State at 1 p.m., respectively.
 
GENERAL
 
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
 
Giovani Mowatt (B.S. '15) ran for the Bison Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field teams.
 
While on the team, he became one of the most decorated distance runners in program history. He became a 12-time medalist (five gold, five silver and two bronze) and earned a placed on the All-MEAC Team all four years. Additionally, Mowatt was a NCAA Division I Regional Championship Qualifier in the 800-meters.

JOSE WHITE
 
The Howard University Athletics family recently lost a member in Jose White. White, 46, was a standout performer for the Bison football team from 1992-94 and was a member of the 1993 team that finished 11-0 during the regular season and captured the Black National championship.
