Bowling Strong Start Continues, Women's Soccer and Volleyball Remain Unbeaten and more

WASHINGTON (October 23, 2019) - This week's Bison Brief features news about bowling, men's & women's soccer, men's & women's swimming and volleyball.

WOMEN'S BOWLING
 
The bowling team participated in the Mount Shootout, hosted by Mount St. Mary's University (October 19 and 20). Boasting a 7-2 mark, the Bison finished sixth overall which is a huge improvement from their bottom four ranking the year before. All five student-athletes finished top five individually.
 
HU returns to action November 1-3 at the Virginia Union Invitational in Glen Allen, Virginia, hosted by Virginia Union University.
 
MEN'S SOCCER
 
The men's soccer team pulled off a narrow victory in the last five minutes against Georgia State University, 1-0. Andres Gomez (Silver Spring, Md.) took the most shots with six overall, leading the Bison to a 4-8-1 record overall and 1-1-0 in Sunbelt conference play.
 
The next match is Saturday, October 26 against Georgia Southern at Greene Stadium.
 
WOMEN'S SOCCER
 
On October 18, the Howard University women's soccer team defeated Mississippi Valley State 3-0 at Sicard Hollow Park. Thalia Boucher (Toronto, Canada), sophomore midfielder, scored two of those three goals. The third goal came from Kendall Macauly (Toronto, Canada).
 
The team earned its most impressive win yet October 20 against Alcorn State. With a score of 5-2, the Bison won their 11th match and remained undefeated in league play (8-0). As a result, this is the 5th time the team has won at least 10 matches in a season under head coach Brent Leiba.
 
Tuesday (October 22), the Southwestern Athletic Conference unveiled its women's soccer weekly honors where Boucher and Macauly claim a pair of accolades. Boucher earned SWAC Offensive Player of the Week while Macauly took home the league's top defender award.
 
This weekend, Howard closes out its conference schedule with a pair of matchups in Alabama.
 
Friday (Oct. 25), HU takes on Alabama A&M in Huntsville, Ala. Match time is set for 4 p.m. (ET)/3 p.m. (CT).
 
Two days later (Oct. 27), the Bison wrap up league play against Alabama State. The action starts 2 p.m. (ET)/ 1 p.m. (CT) in Montgomery, Ala.
 
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
 
On October 19, the men's swim team defeated Chowan, 166-85, joining the women's swim team at 2-0 this season. Of the 11 events won by the Bison, 10 were individual and one was a relay.
 
Tuesday (October 22), the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association revealed its weekly honors where freshman Miles Simon (Atlanta) took home men's swimmer of the week.
 
The team kicks off a three-meet home stand at Burr Gym Pool Saturday, October 26 against Mary Washington.
 
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
 
Saturday (October 19), the Howard University women's swim team won its second match of the season, 140-116, against Chowan. The Bison earned 11 first-place victories, nine of which were individual and two from relays.
 
Fans will have the opportunity to see the team in action Saturday, October 26 against Mary Washington at 1 p.m. in Burr.
 
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
 
The women's volleyball team increased its winning streak to seven in the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference with its victory over Norfolk State (October 18). NSU took an early lead in the first set, but HU soon took charge winning 25-18, 25-13, and 25-15 successively. Senior Kira Porter (Lake Tahoe, Nev.) and freshman Macy Witt-Nobles (Rosharon, Texas) led the way with nine kills apiece.
 
Next weekend, HU concludes its home stand with a pair of foes from the Tar Heel state.
 
Friday (Oct. 25), Howard takes on North Carolina Central at 6 p.m., followed by a MEAC Finals rematch against North Carolina A&T State Sunday (Oct. 27). First-serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
