Howard Bowling’s Success Continues at the Mount Shootout

HU set the tone with a 7-2 mark over the weekend

FREDERICK, Md. (October 20, 2019) – Howard University Women's Bowling team had a strong showing at the Mount Shootout (Oct. 19-20), hosted by Mount St. Mary's University, where they set the tone with a 7-2 overall mark.

HU finished sixth overall in the event, a big improvement from a year ago where they placed in the bottom four.

"It is a wonderful feeling to see all the hard work [pay off]," said Howard women's bowling head coach Ron Davis. "We put a lot of work into this season and [we're] seeing those improvements start to come together and payoff."

Saturday (Oct. 19), Howard went 4-1 with victories against Daemen College (862-850), Wilmington University (888-847), Roberts Wesleyan College (893-762) and Medaille College (941-842). The squad's lone loss came versus tournament winner No. 23 Youngstown State University (895-1014).

Saturday's standout performances came from sophomore Janae Bradford (Chicago) and senior Tea Lewis (Chesterfield, Va.). Individually, Bradford placed eighth overall with a 192 average, including a season-high 224 in the victory over Daemen. For the Virginia native, she earned 13th while rolling a 188 average with a weekend-best 224 against Medaille.

All five Bison finished top 50 individually in the event: sophomores Jahnia Phillips (Elmont, N.Y.; 25th) and Jayla Webster (Woodbridge, Va.; 43rd) and junior captain Carolyn Williams (Glen Burnie, Md.; 45th).

HU took the momentum from Saturday's traditional matches into Sunday's baker matches.

Howard opened the morning with back-to-back wins over Mercyhurst College (779-718) and Chestnut Hill College (897-775).

After recalculating scores, the Bison moved into baker best-of-seven style matches where they faced nationally ranked tournament host Mount St. Mary's. HU rallied from a 3-2 deficit to win games six and seven and advanced to meet Saint Francis College-Brooklyn. Despite an outstanding effort, Howard fell to the Terriers, (3.5-4).

Youngstown State won the 2019 Mount Shootout, defeating No. 20 Duquesne University in the finals, 4-3.

"We still need to fine tune some things," Davis added. "But, as a whole, we are moving in the right direction."
