HU Women’s Basketball Travels to Maryland Eastern Shore for First MEAC Road Game

January 6, 2019 --- The Howard University women's basketball team (8-6, 1-0 MEAC) will travel to Maryland Eastern Shore (5-9, 1-0 MEAC) for their first MEAC road game of the season. The Bison face the Hawks at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, January 7.

Howard held off a second-half surge by Florida A&M University, defeating the Rattlers,74-68, in the MEAC opener in Burr Gym. Ayonna Williams led the Bison with 22 points. Jayla Thornton added 15 points. Sarah Edmond contributed 11 points. Freshman Krislyn Marsh chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Game Preview
The 8-6 Bison are off to their best start in over a decade. Howard is averaging 70.3 points per game and leading the conference in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference standings. Three Bison are averaging double-digit points per game. Junior Sarah Edmond is at the top of the pack with 16.4 ppg, followed by Jayla Thornton with 13.9 ppg and freshman Krislyn Marsh with 10.8 ppg. Marsh is the team's rebound leader, averaging 8.1 rpg. Junior Ayonna Williams has the team's most steals with 27, followed by Sarah Edmond with 25.

The Hawks also opened MEAC play with a win, defeating Morgan State, 73-68. In the preseason, the Hawks were predicted to finish 5th in the conference with 177 points, garnering one first place vote. The team is averaging 66.1 points per game and shooting 37.5 percent from the field. Seniors Ciani Byrom and Keara Eaton lead the team in scoring. Byrom averages 15.4 ppg followed by Eaton's 12.5. Bareisha Gill-Miles leads the Hawks with her eight rebounds per game.

In their last meeting the Hawks defeated the Bison in Burr Gym, 83-79. Ayonna Williams scored a career-high 29 points in that game.
