HU Women’s Basketball Goes on the Road to Face South Carolina State

January 17, 2019 --- The Howard University women's basketball team (10-7, 3-1 MEAC) will face the South Carolina State Bulldogs (8-9, 1-2 MEAC) on Saturday, January 19 at 2:00 p.m.

Last Timeout
The Bison defeated the Morgan State Bears, 79-56, holding the Bears' top scorer Adre'onia Coleman to just six points in the first half. Four Bison scored in the double-digits to round out the win. Jayla Thornton had 20 points. She made three of her four shots at the free throw line and 5-of-6 from three-point range. Sarah Edmond posted 17 points and was perfect on free throws. Both Ayonna Williams and Tariah Johnson put up 10 points. Imani Bryant led both teams with her 11 rebounds. The Bison were able to get 13 second chance points. They also successfully scored 19 off of the bench and 24 points off of turnovers. Asia McCants had 10 off the bench.

Game Preview
Coach Ty Grace and the lady Bison are coming off of back-to-back wins against Bethune-Cookman and Morgan State. Although Howard has the best overall record, its lone conference loss to Maryland Eastern Shore has them with the Hawks for third in conference standings. Howard is averaging 70.4 points and 47.8 rebounds per game, giving them the top scoring and rebound offense in the MEAC.

Three Bison are averaging double-digit points per game. Junior Sarah Edmond leads the team with 16.5 ppg, followed by Jayla Thornton with 13.8 ppg and freshman Krislyn Marsh with 10.5 ppg. Marsh is the team's rebound leader, averaging 8.1 rpg. Forward Imani Bryant is averaging 7.1 rpg. Junior Ayonna Williams has 35 steals this season, followed by Sarah Edmond with 27 and Tariah Johnson's 25.

Scouting the Bulldogs
South Carolina State recently got its first conference win of the season against Coppin State, 75-59. The Bulldog's Taylor Brown and Rhein Beamon managed double-doubles in scoring and rebounds. Brown had 20 points and a season-high 18 rebounds. Beamon contributed 18 points and 11 rebounds.

With a -2.3 scoring margin, the Bulldogs are being outscored and outrebounded (-2.4) by their opponents this season. South Carolina State is averaging 56 points per game to their opponents' 58.3. On rebounds their opponents are averaging 39.9 to the Bulldogs' 37.5 Three Bulldogs are scoring in double-digits, Brown, Beamon and Kemoni Jenkins. Brown is the team's scoring and rebounding leader with her 15.6 ppg and 9.6 rpg.  

In their last meeting, the Bison won, 68-58.
