Friday (Aug. 24), the Bison opened its 2018 campaign in style with a narrow 2-1 victory over the Bryant Bulldogs at Greene Stadium. With the win, HU picked up its first season opening victory in seven years.
"This is only the beginning," said Gyau after Friday's victory. "We're looking forward to good things this season, but again, this is only the beginning. HU [Howard] is rising."
Howard outshot the Bulldogs, 10-8, with senior
Victor Guirma (New Paltz, N.Y.) and junior
Andres Gomez (Silver Spring, Md.) each registering a goal in the victory.
Defensively, junior
Carlos Caro (Silver Spring, Md.) earned three saves in the win.
MATCHUP PREVIEW
Howard opened the season 1-0 for the first time in seven years, dating back to 2011. Coach Gyau and the Bison look to keep the momentum going as they continue to prepare for league play, which begins Oct. 6 versus George Southern at Greene Stadium. In the first match, HU picked up the intense in the latter part of the first half, thanks to their reserves. For now, the Bison seemed have addressed their two challenges from a year ago: inability to score and depth.
LaSalle begins its 2018 campaign against the Bison where they finished 8-9-1 (3-5 A-10) overall a year ago. Last week, the Explorers were predicted to place 10
th in the conference preseason poll. Head coach Rob Irvine enters his third season at the helm where he brings back several key contributors, including sophomore Soji Olatoye and senior Cameron Keys. Both men missed majority of last year due to injury.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
On Sept. 5, Howard concludes its brief two-match road swing in nearby Annapolis where they will face Navy. Game-time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
