SEASON OUTLOOK
Entering his fifth season at the helm, Coach Gyau and the Bison look to turn the corner and take the next step in their pursuit for a Sun Belt (SBC) Title.
"We have high expectations going into the 2018 season," Gyau stated. "This is my best team since I've been at Howard and we're looking forward to a very good season."
A year ago, Howard reached the SBC Semifinals before falling to eventual champions Coastal Carolina, 2-1. Despite the loss, HU showed potential as they went toe-to-toe with the Chanticleers, who went on the road and defeated No. 8 Clemson in the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
MATCHUP PREVIEW
In the offseason, Coach Gyau and his staff addressed two challenges from the 2017 season: the inability to score and lack of depth. In the first 14 matches of the season, Howard was held scoreless 10 times; however, the club played their best ball towards the end of the year, scoring in their final six matches. Graduate Student
Joel Cunningham (Spanish Town, Jamaica) and junior
Andres Gomez (Silver Springs, Md.) return to lead the Bison attack. Defensively, Howard also brings back 2018 Sun Belt Preseason All-Conference selection junior goalkeeper
Carlos Caro (Silver Springs, Md.).
Bryant enters Friday's contest picked to finish seventh in the Northeast Conference. Last season, the Bulldogs placed sixth in a tight conference race that had third through seventh place separated by just three points. A year ago, the squad finished second in the league by allowing only 1.12 goals per match. Sophomores James Cochrane and Matthew Kane anchor the club's defense.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
On Aug. 28, Howard travels to the City of Brotherly Love where La Salle awaits. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
