WASHINGTON (April 22, 2018) – Howard University Softball team took the early advantage, but the Delaware State (DSU) Hornets rallied to down the Bison in extra innings, 9-5, at Nationals Youth Academy.
Howard did most of its damage in the first couple innings. Despite producing five runs on 10 hits, the Bison left seven runners on base.
Sophomore
Kamryn Tillman and freshman
Trinity Gibbs each collected three hits while redshirt freshman
Zaria Hall went 2-of-4 with two runs scored in a losing effort.
After DSU scored on an unearned run in the first, 1-0, HU (5-36, 3-11 MEAC) manufactured four runs in the first inning, capped off by a two-run double from Gibbs, 4-1.
Delaware State responded with a pair of runs in the second, 4-3, but a RBI-single by Tillman gave Howard a two-run cushion after two, 5-3.
DSU scored in the fifth and six to tie the game; thus, forcing extra innings.
Both squads went scoreless in the eighth, but the Hornets would take control and win the rubber match with a four-run inning in the ninth, highlighted by a three-run blast from DSU's Micaela Cummings, 9-5.
Delaware State (11-26, 9-5 MEAC) registered nine runs on 10 hits, led by Sabrina Quarles going 3-of-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles in the victory.
