Spartans complete season sweep over Bison

WASHINGTON (April 15, 2018) – Howard University Softball team lost its series finale against Norfolk State (NSU), 10-5, at Nationals Youth Academy.

HU (4-34, 2-9 MEAC) produced five runs on six hits, led by reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Rookie of the Week Trinity Gibbs going 2-of-4 with a run scored. Fellow classmate Alyssa Lavine delivered a huge two-run single in a losing effort.

NSU scored four times in the opening frame, capped off by a two-run double from Norfolk State's Kylee Lopez, 4-0.

HU got on the board in the bottom half with a wild pitch, scoring redshirt freshman Zaria Hall, 4-1.

Norfolk State capitalized on multiple Howard errors; thus, ballooning their advantage to eight midway through the fourth, 9-1.

Despite the hole, HU refused to go away. Howard responded with a four-run inning in the fourth, capped off by Lavine's two-run single to left field that sent home sophomores Noel Merritt and Kamryn Tillman, 9-5.

NSU withstood the Bison's late charge and added an insurance run in the sixth, 10-5.

Redshirt junior Mackenzi Steele kept Howard in the contest, going four innings with four Ks while allowing one unearned run in relief.

Norfolk State (18-23, 8-7 MEAC) registered 10 runs on 10 hits, led by Lopez going 4-of-5 with two doubles and a pair of runs scored in the victory.
