BALTIMORE (March 1, 2018) – Coach
Ty Grace and the Howard University Women's Basketball team ruined Coppin State's (CSU) Senior Night as they defeated the Eagles, 87-69, inside the Physical Education Complex (PEC) Arena.
HU (12-17, 8-8 MEAC) shot a respectable 47-percent (31-of-66) from the floor, including a scorching 44-percent (10-of-23) from long range.
Six Bison reached double figures, led by sophomore
Sarah Edmond and freshman
Jayla Thornton with 16 points apiece.
Second-year Bison
Imani Bryant and
Ayonna Williams each posted a double-double. Bryant registered 12 points and 12 boards while the D.C. native filled the stat sheet, producing 10 points, 10 dimes (career-high), seven boards, and three steals in the victory.
HU opened the second half on a 7-2 run and ballooned its lead to 20 at the 7:10 mark in the third, 51-31. Moments later, Bryant split a pair of free throws and gave the Bison its largest advantage, 63-35. Coppin State fought but were unable to get within striking distance.
Sophomore
Jayla Myles scored 11 points in 20 minutes of action while fellow classmate
Star Fitzgerald-Greer chipped in 13 points off the bench.
Howard trailed after the first period, 17-14, but shot extremely well in the second quarter. HU shot 59-percent (10-of-17) from the field while holding the Eagles to under 24-percent (4-of-17); thus, the Bison outscored CSU in the period, 30-12, and took a commanding 15-point advantage at the break, 44-29.
CSU (6-22, 5-11 MEAC) was held under 32-percent (23-of-72) from the field. The double-double machine Chance Graham led the way, manufacturing 25 point (game-high) and 14 rebounds (game-high). Seniors Genesis Lucas and Candice Beverly played their final game in PEC Arena where they combined for 23 points in the loss.
Howard's next stop is the MEAC Basketball Tournament in Norfolk, Va. The six-day event (March 5-10) will take place inside the Norfolk Scope Arena. Date and time is to be determined.
