CHAPEL HILL (December 28, 2018) - Howard women's basketball team fell to the University of North Carolina Tar Heels today, 85-63, in Carmichael Arena. The Bison are now 7-6 on the season.
Howard opened the game with a 7-0 run to put North Carolina (9-5) on heavy defense. The first quarter was aggressive and competitive; however, the Tar Heels had the edge closing the period, 20-15.
The Bison kept the game close in the second period. A three-pointer by
Sarah Edmond at the seven-minute mark put the Bison within three points of the Tar Heels. North Carolina was consistent and efficient with their responses, widening the score by as many as 11 points. The Bison did not back down.
Star Fitzgerald-Greer put up the final three points in the period to close the first half with the Bison down, 38-31.
The Bison started out strong at the start of the third period. Successful back-to-back shots by
Jayla Thornton and
Krislyn Marsh closed the gap to four points. Again, the Tar Heels responded, eventually getting in a rhythm that the Bison were unable to stop. North Carolina sophomore Janelle Bailey and junior Shayla Bennett showed up big time for the Tar Heels to slow down the Bison offense. Bailey put up 30 points to lead both teams in scoring. Bennet contributed 12 points.
Howard's Edmond had a team high of 16 points with Marsh, a freshman, contributing 12 points. Additionally, Edmond had six assists, three steals and four rebounds. Marsh led the team with nine rebounds.

Star Fitzgerald-Greer each chipped in eight points.
Today's game was the final non-conference game of the season. The Bison open up MEAC play at home on Saturday, January 5 against the Florida A&M Rattlers at 2 p.m.
