BRONX, N.Y. (December 16, 2018) – Howard University men's basketball team dropped a tough bout on the road at Fordham, 74-67, inside the Rose Hill Gym.
With the setback, HU fell to 6-5 overall while the Rams improved to 8-3 on the season.
Despite the outcome, sophomore guard
RJ Cole (Union, N.J.) made history by becoming the fastest Bison to reach 1,000 points in program history (44 games). James Daniel previously set the mark, reaching the 1000-point club in 55 contests.
Four Bison recorded double-figures, led by Cole with 18 points. Third-year guard
Charles Williams (Richmond, Va.) netted 16 points while grabbing seven boards in the loss.
HU overcame its sluggish first half and shot 47-percent (14-of-30) after intermission.
"We want to play fast, but we had another tonight where we couldn't make shots," said Howard Men's Basketball head coach
Kevin Nickelberry. "When you're not making shots and turning over the ball, you're not going to win many games on the road."
Fordham scored 22 points off turnovers and held Howard under 31-percent (8-of-26) in the first 20 minutes of play.
HU drew 25 fouls and reached the charity stripe 31 times but missed 11 freebies on the night.
"We're a pretty good free throw shooting team," Coach Nickelberry added. "We got to the line, but they weren't falling tonight. We got to get back into the lab and figure out these scoring droughts and missed free throws."
Howard controlled the glass, 41-34, led by sophomore
Zion Cousins with a game-high 10 boards.
"That's what we expect," said Coach Nickelberry on Cousins recording his third consecutive 10-plus rebound game. "That's what he has done since his freshman year. He's been able to keep us in the plus column for rebounding."
Redshirt junior
Chad Lott (Shreveport, La.) flirted with a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds and seven points in a losing effort.
Fordham (8-3) had three Rams in double-figures, led by Antwon Portley with a game-high 22 points.
Howard ends its three-game road swing against Ball State Thursday (Dec. 20) before returning to D.C. where they meet longtime rival Hampton Saturday (Dec. 22) at the Entertainment & Sports Complex.
